1. Background

At The Avenue Church (the “Church”), we value your privacy, and describe in this Privacy Policy (the “Privacy Policy” or “Policy”) how we collect and use and share the information that you share with us.  We use the words “we”, “our” and “us” to refer to the Church, and we use “you” and “your” to refer to anyone we obtain information from, and anyone reading this Privacy Policy. 

This Policy applies to information we collect from you or that you may provide when you visit this website, or any mobile application we may provide.  While this Policy is not intended to describe all of the ways we may collect information “offline” (such as when we see you at an event), we describe some of the most important ways we collect information in those ways, as well.

2. Information Collected From You

a.              Information You or Others Provide to Us

We collect information when you contact or interact with us through this website or by telephone, email, direct mail or your mobile phone.   We also receive information when you support us through donations, or participate in (or purchase) various programs and services we may offer.  We also may receive information from partners and other organizations we work with, such as when we co-sponsor, co-present or co-market with another organization.

That information may include the following:

  • Contact information, such as name, address, phone number and email address.

  • Other personal information you provide to us.

  • Information about your interactions with content, such as what you do on our website, information you provide when you fill out forms, and information you provide when participating in a Church program or making a donation.

  • Information you post on our website (if we provide the ability to do that).

  • Information that we collect when you establish a connection with a third-party social network platform

  • Any other communications you have with us, such as through email correspondence.

  • Your responses to surveys that we might ask you to complete for research purposes.

  • Details of transactions or donations with us, include payment and financial information.

b. Information Collected Automatically

We may place or read “cookies” on your device which help us recognize you when you visit our website, or interact with advertising or emails.  These cookies may contain or be associated with a unique ID, usually a random string of digits. We may also work with third parties who place and read their own cookies on our website, and may link this with data collected on other websites (or data collected through other channels, devices, and interactions).  For more information about cookies and similar technologies, please go to Section 5, titled “Cookies and Similar Technologies.”

c. Information Collected Offline

We also collect information from you offline, such as when you attend an event or program that we sponsor, that another organization sponsors in the Church, or when we interact with you in other ways in person.  This Privacy Policy is not intended to exhaustively list all of the ways we may interact or communicate with or receive information from you in an offline setting. However, if we do receive information from you in this way, including personal information, we may retain and use it as described in this Privacy Policy.  

We may combine any of the above information, for any of the purposes we describe in this Policy.

3. How We Use Your Information

We may use information that we collect about you or that you provide to us to: 

  • Conduct our Church activities (for instance, to provide information to you, or minister to you);

  • Communicate with you about the Church or about information and service you request from us;

  • Communicate with you (or permit a partner or third party to communicate with you) about events, offers, or services that may be of interest to you or your family;

  • Facilitate, process, or verify your donations or purchases;

  • Verify your identity (online or offline), or to establish an online account (if we provide that for our members);

  • Operate our Church and protect our members;

  • Improve any service we or our partner organizations offer;

  • Investigate, prevent, or take action regarding unlawful or harmful activities, including potential threats to the physical safety of a person, potential fraud, and violations of our terms, rules or policies;

  • Facilitate any other purpose for which you provide it, in any other way we may describe when you provide it, and for any other purposes with your consent; and

  • Create aggregated, anonymized or de-identified information, which we may use and disclose without restriction (for instance, for analysis, research or marketing purposes).

4. How and To Whom We Share Your Information

  • We may share your information for a variety of reasons, primarily related to the programs and services that we provide.  For example, we share your information:

  • To a variety of service providers who may help us run our organization, solicit donations, recruit members and provide services.  These include service providers who assist us with tasks such as (but not limited to) billing, website hosting and management, technical infrastructure and support, order fulfillment, email services, advertising and marketing, outreach, and program management. Any of the information described in this Policy above may be shared with service providers; 

  • With third parties with whom we may co-sponsor or co-market a program, service, or event;

  • To help us detect and address fraud, credit risk, security or technical issues;

  • Without restriction when the information is aggregated and de-identified, including for analysis, advertising or research purposes.  For instance, we or a partner we work with may de-identify contact information (such as email addresses), in order to create de-identified cookies that may be used to send you relevant content.  These cookies may be linked to other information about you (such as demographic data) or your online activities;

  • When we believe that such sharing is reasonably necessary in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding possible unlawful activities or to comply with legal process or other legal requirements;

  • When appropriate in situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person, the Church or property, or claims of violation of the rights of third parties; or when appropriate to protect the rights, property and safety of us, our employees, or another person or entity (the disclosures described here may involve the sharing of your information with, for example, law enforcement, government agencies, courts, or other parties); and

  • In any other circumstances where we have your consent or are otherwise permitted by law to share it.

5. Cookies and Similar Technologies

We and third parties use automated means to collect information about you, your computer or other device, when you use our website.  These automated means include technologies such as cookies, Web server logs, Web beacons and JavaScript, as well as functionality that can collect data from a mobile device.

Cookies.  Cookies are files that websites and online services create and access on your device to uniquely identify your browser or store information on your device.  Your browser may tell you how to be notified when you receive certain types of cookies and how to restrict or disable certain cookies. You also may be able to delete your Flash cookies or adjust your Flash cookie settings by visiting the Adobe Flash Website Storage Settings Manager by following Adobe’s instructions here.  Please note, however, that without cookies you may not be able to use all of the features of our website.

Web Beacons or Pixels.  In conjunction with the gathering of information through cookies and other automated means, Web servers may log information such as your device type, operating system type, browser type, domain, and other system settings, as well as the language your system uses and the country and time zone where your device is located. They also may log information about your interaction with our Service, such as which pages you visit. To control which Web servers collect information by automated means, we may place tags on our Web pages called "Web beacons" or “pixels,” which are files that link Web pages to particular Web servers and their cookies. We also may include Web beacons in e-mail messages.  We or third parties also may send instructions to your device to store or gather the sorts of information described above and other details about your interactions.

We (or others we work with) may use the above technologies for a variety of purposes, including (but not limited) to

  • Recognizing you online,

  • Analyzing our web site (or app) usage,

  • Customizing the ads or content we or other companies show you, such as to “retarget” ads to you online or send display ads that may be relevant to you, or to associate cookies with de-identified information about you.

  • Making our website more efficient or operational.

6. Your Choices

Accessing Your Information. Depending on where you live, you may have a right to request that the Church give you access to your information, delete or modify your information, or opt out of having your information sold. You may exercise the rights by contacting us using the information provided in this policy. We do our best to consider all request of this nature, even if not legally required to do so.

Opting Out of Interest-Based Advertising.  There are several ways to “opt out” of most of the services that we or others may use to target “interest based” ads, i.e., ads that are targeted based on information about you and the websites or mobile apps you use. To avoid or “opt out” of interest-based advertising, you may visit the opt out portals operated by the DAA, an industry association that addresses interest-based advertising.  The DAA’s opt out portal is here.  You may also opt out of many companies that are involved in interest-based advertising by going to the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) consumer choice page here.

You may also be able to opt out of ad targeting that is based on your activities across mobile applications and over time, through your device settings.

7. Social Media Information

If we provide you a way to connect an external social media account to our website (for example, to use Facebook to sign up for or login to our Service), we generally will collect information from the external account.  The specific types of information depend on the external account. If you connect via Facebook, for example, we may collect your public profile, friends list, email address and related information. Please see your external accounts’ privacy policies and support documents for more information about their sharing of information with connected accounts.

8. Children’s Information

We do not target or provide any information or services to those under the age of 13. If you are under 13, please do not use or register, make any purchases, or use any of the interactive or public comment features on this website, or provide any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address or user name you may use. 9. Do Not Track Signals

We currently do not respond to “Do Not Track” signals, as the online industry has not reached a consensus as to those protocols.

10. Data Security 

We understand and respect the importance of the security of the information we collect.  Nonetheless, please note that neither we nor any organization can provide complete assurances that our security measures will avoid all security risks or breaches.  When you provide information to us, you do so at your own risk. If we provide you password-protected access to an online membership account, please do your part by (1) using a strong, unique password, (2) nor sharing your password (and periodically changing it), and (3) using a device with updated anti-virus and security settings.

11. Third Party Links, Programs and Services

Our website may contain links to third party websites or services -- for instance, third parties who provide events, programs or services.  When you interact with these other parties, or links they place on our website, you should understand that those parties’ privacy policies – not ours – will apply.  Likewise, if you provide information to third parties at events that we or they sponsor (or co-sponsor) or host (or co-host), that information will be handled pursuant to their – not our – policies.    Therefore, we are not responsible for the content, security or practices of any third parties. We do not vet, endorse or make any representations about third parties or their websites, applications or services.

12. Changes to this Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may change from time to time. Your continued use of this website after we make changes is deemed to be acceptance of those changes, so please check the policy periodically for updates.  

If we make material changes to how we treat our users' personal information, we will notify you in a manner we deem reasonable, such as by e-mail to the e-mail address provided to us and/or through a notice on the website.  Please ensure that we have your updated email information, if you wish to receive these updates.
